During his playing career, Ian Wright was a quality striker who wore his heart on his sleeve. Now involved in the media, he is never slow to speak up on behalf of his son Shaun Wright-Philips. Well, apart from those occasions when he has a stinker. In the past, we have heard him calling for SWP to be included in the England team. Now he has launched a blistering attack on Manchester City over his son’s contract negotiations.
This is a player who has been earning £70,000 a week since signing for Chelsea in 2005. If he feels he should be on the same wages as Man City’s top earners fair enough. But please let us not have this bleating by his old man that City is treating him as a youth team player. You can bet youngsters in youth teams up and down the country would love to be coining it in to the tune of £70,000 a week.
He says the club should pay him what he is worth but some people might argue he is already getting exactly that. Others would suggest he is paid considerably more than he is worth. SWP is a good player but consistency has always been his problem. He signed a four year contract on his return to City. Fast forward two years and he would like to renegotiate the contract. Is he worth £100,000 a week? No, I don’t think he is but hey welcome to planet footballer.

Treat Like a Youth Team Player

SWP should concider himself lucky, I have not really followed him that much but did see a bit of him the other night in the England friendly, he set up a good goal, but in the past from what I see it's a little hit and miss in his performnace, no offence to the lad but when Ian Wright took to the field he went out there with an aim, and that was to give an entertaining 90 mins of football, and he did that well. SWP like many of the players today base a teams "heart" on the depth of the back balance. I am not a pro footballer but I can say that if I was offered £70K a week, the ball would be going in the back of the net week in week out! I think most people would agree if you live in the "working class" you would play with more passion thus most probably bringing you more success... no player is worth, or more to the point needs 70K a week.. and this relates to the Gerrard post I commented on a few moments ago.... money making them all crazy! SWP wants 100K give him a £1 per goal, see how much he earns a week then haha!
It certainly makes you chuckle. Especially the bit where he says City are forcing him out. He has got 2 years left on his contract for crying out loud.
SWP should stop getting his dad to stick up for him - you're a big lad now Shaun, speak up for yourself.
If you don't think that 70K a week (3.6million per year) is enough - go and ply your trade elsewhere. Just because Man City have money to burn doesn't mean that they should pay over the odds for anyone.
I like SWP but 70K a week should be more than enough for anyone. If you sign a 4 year contract you should be willing to stick to the terms of that contract like the rest of us.
It just shows the utter greed there is in football today. Players are bleeding clubs for as much as possible whilst there are teams going out of business under threat of closure. It amazes me that someone on £70,000 a week could be unhappy that he is being treated unfairly. Unbelievable!
Football is like life, it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority. So play football, read football, watch football and live football.
I could understand if SWP was one of their standout players, however, if anything, he is an under-achiever. In my mind, there is no way he should expect to get paid MORE than the contract he signed.
City were always trying to force him out, he should have seen this coming
It demonstrates how the finances of football clubs have gone out of control. Good premiership players are no longer satisfied with wages of 50 to 70k a week. Now they want a 6 figure weekly wage. It is ridiculous.
