Liverpool In Pole Position

As the premiership season approaches, the halfway point Liverpool is in an excellent position at the top of the table. The other title contenders such as Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal have been striving to keep up. They have all had problems with injuries and results have suffered as a result.

Their results have been impressive especially when you consider the lack of a goal scoring contribution from Robbie Keane. The £20 million fee they agreed to pay Tottenham now looks to be over the top. There are even rumours that new Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is keen to take Keane back to White Hart Lane.

Fernando Torres has also had his season interrupted by several niggling injuries yet Liverpool continues on regardless. As always their best player Steven Gerrard continues to drive them on from midfield chipping in with vital goals. But it is the management of Rafa Benitez where improvement is more noticeable.

In the past Benitez came under fire for constantly tinkering with his team. Regardless of how well the team played he would change personnel for the next game. This did not go down well with fans or players and the lack of a settled side was not conducive to a serious premiership title challenge. This season he has been less inclined to do this and results have improved as a result.

The busy Christmas period will offer some clues whether Liverpool can remain in top spot. They have not won the title since 1990 under the guidance of former boss and Anfield legend Kenny Dalglish. In recent years, it has all been Man Utd or Chelsea as main contenders so a sustained challenge from Liverpool will make things interesting.
