Fabio Capello gave England fans an early Christmas present with an impressive 2-1 win against the Germans with defenders Matthew Upson and John Terry the unlikely goalscorers.
As the Germany match approached it was hard to see any chance of a positive result with England missing several of their better players. Big names absentees included Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard
There are some players in particular whose injuries always seem to coincide with England games especially if they are considered non competitive or meaningless. You can guarantee that the missing stars will be fully recovered on come the next round of premiership matches.
The pleasing thing about this performance was the players who came in as replacements all did a job. Those who were ruled out through injury were not really missed on the night. It could be argued that a performance from some of the fringe players was long overdue and several of them delivered just that.
Capello called it a perfect end to a perfect year and it was a performance of note coupled with a good result. There is no doubt that under Capello the team has improved considerably and progressed during his first year in charge.
