Normal service was resumed at Wembley in the first half as England struggled against Kazakhstan who not only defended well but also had a few half chances to boot.
With the deadlock still to be broken there was some stick flying around as the half time whistle sounded despite Fabio Capello pleading in the days leading up to the game for the fans not to boo the players.
England fans travel from all parts of the country to watch the national team and if they feel these well paid stars are not displaying the same level of commitment and pride in playing for their country they will let them know about it.
In the second half England did start to find the net with goals from Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney and Jermaine Defoe although a 5-1 scoreline was a little flattering when the overall performance is taken into account.
We were treated to another dose of Lampard and Gerrard struggling to play together in the same midfield and quite clearly nothing that has been attempted so far looks like working.
The problem is they are both similar types of player who are at their best when surging forward and scoring goals from midfield so if you ask that kind of player to adopt a holding role or play out wide you will not get the same end product.
The country would probably be split over who is the better player out of Lampard and Gerrard but it might be time to pick one or the other and then stick with the man in form which will at least lead to a bit of competition between the two of them.
