Watching England On Television

The downside of England’s magnificent performance against Croatia was that most of the country did not get the opportunity to see it as Setanta had the live TV rights and not one of Sky, BBC or ITV able to show even highlights although ITV did show extended highlights the following night but if that’s the best we can do it is a scandal.

There has been much debate over who is to blame with some criticism being levelled at Setanta for not allowing highlights and wanting to maintain exclusivity and if that is true then they need not worry about exclusivity because it is a sure fire way to upset your potential customers and target market.

The various TV companies and channels can squabble over the TV rights as much as they like but what the nation expects at the very least is to be able to watch its own national football team surely that is not too much to ask.

The BBC does not escape criticism in this after all this organization quietly collects a handsome sum from each household in the country thanks to the TV licence and for what exactly? Because it certainly does not provide TV superior to its competitors and as for top level Sport the BBC seems unwilling to spend any money preferring instead to keep hold of its (or rather our) money.

The game itself in the form of the FA should also shoulder some responsibility for failing to ensure that the country can watch all England’s competitive matches in some form and it is unfortunate that this has been the only negative in the week when some national pride has been restored at last.
