They may have got the three points with a 2-0 win over Andorra but England were far from convincing with a display that once again raises more questions than it provides answers.
England's team of premiership stars are OK when they have foreign talent to prop them up every week but whenever they have to stand on their own two feet representing their country they look very ordinary and do nothing to justify their ridiculous wages.
This is probably why there now seems to be a crescendo of boos aimed at the team on a regualr basis whenever they are not setting the world alight which is not ideal but the players should not forget that the average fan spends a lot of money following football and these players earn more in a week than most earn in five years hence the hostility.
One hopes that the next quaifier against Croatia will represent more of a challenge and after they stuffed us in the Euro 2008 qualification group there should be no lack of motivation in the England dressing room to settle that particular score.
Just qualifying for the World Cup would be an achievement in itself never mind winning it and that shows just how bad things have become in recent years because for us to repeat the success of 1966 we would have to drop on a golden generation of talent and unfortunately there is no such talent on the horizon.
