Same Old Story From England

No sooner has the football season started we have an international break for another one of those friendly matches that leaves us none the wiser with regards to certain issues relating to the England team.

This latest match ended in a 2-2 draw against the Czech Republic with Joe Cole scrambling a late winner over the line to give England a fortuitous share of the spoils which some would say they scarcely deserved after a poor first half.

There seems to be somewhat of a mystery as to why players who look world class in the premiership every week can somehow look very ordinary when they pull on an England shirt with the exception of David Beckham who seems to be ordinary full stop these days.

Years ago representing your country was the ultimate honour for any professional footballer but now we live in an age where our premiership stars are treated like Hollywood film stars with salaries to match it is probably not that big a deal anymore and the only time it actually seems to dawn on some players is when they miss out on the publicity of the European Championships or the World Cup.

Maybe if we paid these players £100,000 each for gracing the country with their presence we might see an upturn in England's performance levels and while that is a sad thing to say it is most probably true.

This friendly match still leaves questions unanswered among them a tired looking Beckham's long term role in the team, the age old Gerrard and Lampard in the same midfield question and the lack of real quality to accompany Rooney up front.
