After all the shenanigans which have been going on pretty much since the end of last season Cristiano Ronaldo has finally admitted defeat in his quest to engineer a move to Real Madrid.
The last throw of the dice for Madrid was the hope that the player himself could persuade United to let him go but realistically at this late stage of the close season that was never going to happen.
Fergie has obviously worked hard in recent weeks to fight off interest from the Spanish giants and throwing in the towel now would leave him without his best player who also happens to be one of the best players in the world with no hope of finding an immediate replacement quickly it would also effectively hand the premiership title on a plate to Phil Scolari and Chelsea.
The official line is that Ronaldo has agreed to remain at Old Trafford for at least another year so it will not be too much of a surprise if all this speculation resurfaces in nine months time if the player is hell bent on securing his dream move to Spain.
